Based on a true story, this emotional drama was directed by and stars Denzel Washington. However, the central role is played by newcomer Derek Luke, who gives a fine performance. Antwone Fisher (Luke) is a troubled young African-American sailor in the U.S. Navy who frequently gets into fights. He is ordered to see psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Washington), and the result of his sessions will determine whether or not he will be discharged. Davenport and Fisher gradually make progress, and along the way, Fisher begins to date a nice woman named Cheryl (Joy Bryant). Eventually, Davenport advises Fisher he must come to terms with his past, and Fisher sets off on a journey to do just that. But Davenport has some problems, too, and his working with Fisher is good for both men.
