About the DVD Release of "South Park - The Passion of the Jew"

DVD Release Date: August 31, 2004

On August 31, 2004, Comedy Central released a DVD containing three "South Park" television episodes dealing with religion. Set in a Rocky Mountain town, the cable TV show features crudely drawn animation, coarse language, and an overabundance of toilet humor. The three episodes contained on this DVD are particularly irreverent.

The DVD consists solely of three episodes, each 22 minutes long. All you get is 66 minutes of "South Park." There are no bonus materials, no subtitles, and no closed captions.

I got a lot of belly laughs out of watching the three episodes on the DVD, although I also groaned a few times and was occasionally offended. Here's a rundown on each episode:

"The Passion of the Jew" (Originally aired March 31, 2004)
During the theatrical run of "The Passion of the Christ" in South Park, one local boy who's seen the film 34 times prays to a picture of Mel Gibson dressed as Braveheart. However, seeing "The Passion" gives a Jewish boy nightmares. Also, two other boys find the movie lacking in entertainment value and track down Gibson, who invites them to torture him. Soon, reaction to the film in South Park puts the town in turmoil.

"Christian Rock Hard" (Originally aired October 29, 2003)
A cynical South Park boy forms a Christian rock band called Faith + 1. He gets lyrics by taking old love songs and changing words like "baby" to "Jesus." His band does numbers like "I Wasn't Born Again Yesterday." Meanwhile, three other boys are arrested for illegally downloading music on the Internet and told they have caused a delay in the installation of a gold-plated poolside bar at the home of Metallica's drummer.

"Red Hot Catholic Love" (Originally aired July 3, 2002)
When the Catholic Church child molestation scandal prompts people to become atheists, South Park's Father Maxi goes to Rome to address the problem. There he gets involved in an attempt to change the Holy Document of Vatican Law. Meanwhile, a boy discovers that food can be ingested through the rear end and defecated out of the mouth. This is declared healthier than the old way of eating by the Surgeon General.
