Part 3: A Sneak Peek at Next Week's Releases on Video/DVD

There are some interesting video/DVD releases slated for next week, including "The Good Girl," "Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat," "Signs," and "Who Is Cletis Tout?" Let's take a look at these movies on DVD and video, along with some additional releases of interest.

January 7 - Video and DVD Releases

"The Good Girl" (2002)

 DVD

Tagline: "It's her last best chance... is she going to take it?"

Length: 93 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for sexuality, some language and drug content

This offbeat indie drama is sometimes funny and features a fine performance by Jennifer Aniston (from "Friends"). Aniston plays Justine, a thirtyish clerk at Retail Rodeo, a discount department store. Justine is married to a house painter, but her husband mostly ignores her, preferring to get stoned with his buddy. Feeling needy, she gets into a sexual relationship with another Retail Rodeo clerk, a man in his early twenties who calls himself Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal). But soon things take a surprising turn, and when Justine finds herself facing a crisis involving Holden, her husband, and her husband's buddy, she deals with it any way she can. "The Good Girl" has much the same strange sensibility as "Chuck & Buck" (2000) because both films had the same director and the same writer.

"Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat" (2002)

 DVD

Length: 113 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for strong crude sexual dialogue and pervasive language

This movie consists primarily of comedy routines filmed during live performances by the talented Martin Lawrence at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. "Runteldat" translates to something like "Run tell that!" in standard English. The film is loaded with graphic language that some find offensive, others find hilarious, and still others find not funny enough. Lawrence makes lots of remarks about bodily functions and sexual issues, but much of his material centers around his own sometimes troubled life. Specifically, he covers his 1996 arrest for causing a disturbance in an intersection while under the influence of a controlled substance and his 1999 collapse from heat exhaustion that left him in a coma. The movie includes reenactments of TV tabloid shows reporting on these incidents.

"Signs" (2002)

 DVD

Tagline: "It's not like they didn't warn us."

Length: 106 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some frightening moments

Mel Gibson stars in this suspense thriller written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable"). Gibson plays Graham Hess, a single father who lives on a Pennsylvania farm with his two kids and his adult younger brother. Hess was formerly a Christian clergyman, but he has lost his faith. One day the Hess family finds large, unexplained crop circles in their farm's vast cornfields. Then they see television news reports of other seemingly supernatural events elsewhere in the world. Strange things happen that suggest the possibility that extraterrestrial aliens may be preparing for some sort of an invasion. The Hess family comes to fear for its safety, and Graham Hess goes through a moral crisis. Shyamalan's genius lies in his ability to evoke an atmosphere of ominous dread.

"Who Is Cletis Tout?" (2002)

 DVD

Tagline: "Getting the alias was half the battle. Surviving it is the other."

Length: 92 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for language, some violence and sexuality

This crime comedy has a convoluted plot and relies heavily on references to other movies for its humor. Trevor Finch (Christian Slater) is an escaped convict who has a loaded gun pointed at him. The gun is held by professional hitman and movie buff Critical Jim (Tim Allen), who believes Finch is Cletis Tout, a man the mob wants dead. Finch tells Critical Jim that he has the wrong man-Finch claims that after his escape from prison, he borrowed Tout's identity. In flashbacks, Finch recounts a labyrinthine tale about a jewel heist and a jailbreak and their aftermath, involving a magician named Micah (Richard Dreyfuss) and his daughter Tess (Portia de Rossi). An amused Critical Jim frequently punctuates the long story with references to famous movies as Finch tries to talk his way out of being killed.
