December 31 - Video and DVD Releases - Video and DVD Releases

"Hey Arnold! The Movie" (2002)

 DVD

Tagline: "A big problem calls for a big head."

Length: 76 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG for some thematic elements

Many adults will be bored with this animated children's film, which is based on the Nickelodeon cable network TV show "Hey Arnold!." As on the TV show, the title character is a kid with a football-shaped head who lives with his grandparents. He enjoys hanging out in his quaint, but somewhat rundown, neighborhood with his buddy Gerald, who has a towering flattop, and he endures the insults of Helga, who is secretly attracted to him. In "Hey Arnold! The Movie" a ruthless developer wants to demolish everything in Arnold's neighborhood and erect a shopping mall. But Arnold and Gerald think they may have a way of stopping the demolition, and with time running out, they work toward saving their neighborhood, getting some behind-the-scenes help from Helga along the way.

"XXX" (2002)

 DVD

Tagline: "A new breed of secret agent."

Length: 124 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for violence, non-stop action sequences, sensuality, drug content and language.

Vin Diesel stars in this action movie, which also features Samuel L. Jackson and Asia Argento. Xander Cage (Diesel) is a daredevil who sometimes gets involved in illegal stunts to make a point, and Augustus Gibbons (Jackson), a National Security Agency official, offers him a choice between prison and accepting a dangerous undercover assignment. Xander ends up being tasked with stopping a Czech madman named Yorgi (Marton Csokas), who threatens to use a biochemical weapon. Xander travels to Prague, where he infiltrates Yorgi's organization and meets the alluring Yelena (Argento), who starts to fall for him. "XXX" has high production values and many well-done action sequences, and the movie is in general rather like a James Bond film, except it skews younger and is a little more down and dirty.

"Barbershop" (2002)

 DVD

Tagline: "Everyone's gettin' lined up!"

Length: 102 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for language, sexual content and brief drug references

This warmhearted comedy stars Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer. The movie centers around a Chicago barbershop where seven barbers work-six are African American (five men, one woman) and the seventh is a white male. The barbershop is owned by Calvin (Ice Cube), who inherited it from his father. But Calvin has big dreams and sells the marginally profitable shop to a loan shark. Then Calvin changes his mind, only to discover that getting his shop back won't be easy. Meanwhile, a pair of bumbling thieves grapple with an ATM machine they stole from a nearby store. Eventually, Calvin learns some important life lessons. But the film is at its best during the rambling barbershop conversations, particularly those involving the older barber named Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer).
