November 5 - Video and DVD Releases

"Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" (2002)

 DVD

Tagline: "Mothers. Daughters. The never-ending story of good vs. evil."

Length: 116 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for mature thematic elements, language, and brief sensuality

Ellen Burstyn, Sandra Bullock, Maggie Smith, Ashley Judd, James Garner, Fionnula Flanagan, and Shirley Knight star in this upbeat drama, which was directed and co-scripted by Callie Khouri. The movie is adapted from novels by Rebecca Wells. Vivi (Burstyn) is an older woman who lives in Louisiana, as do her three lifelong friends—Caro (Smith), Teensy (Flanagan), and Necie (Knight). These four constitute the self-styled Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Vivi's daughter Sidda (Bullock) is a New York playwright who is estranged from her mother. Caro, Teensy, and Necie abduct Sidda and show her their scrapbook, titled "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood," to try to make her understand her troubled mother. In flashbacks, Judd portrays Vivi as a young adult. Garner plays Vivi's husband Shep.

     DVD

Tagline: "Saving the world before bedtime!"

    Length: 87 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG for non-stop frenetic animated action

This is an animated children's film, but adults who watch it with kids probably won't mind it too much. The movie tells the story of the origin of the three little girls who appear regularly in a TV series on the Cartoon Network. It seems that in the city of Townsville, Professor Utonium set out to create the perfect little girl in his lab. He put in sugar and spice and everything nice, but a substance called Chemical X accidentally got into the mix, and out came Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup—three little girls with huge heads, big eyes that can shoot laser beams, and the ability to fly. The girls are conned by an evil monkey named Mojo Jojo into helping him and other simians take over Townsville. But eventually the Powerpuff Girls learn from their mistakes and use their superpowers to set things right.
