Part 1: This Week's Releases on Video/DVD

by Ivana Redwine

There are some interesting video/DVD releases for October 1, 2002, including "Brotherhood of the Wolf" and "The Scorpion King." Let's take a look at these films, along with a few additional releases of interest, and take a sneak peek at next week's movies on video/DVD.

"Brotherhood of the Wolf" (2002)

 DVD

Length: 144 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for strong violence and gore, and sexuality/nudity

Set in 18th-century France, this offbeat film starts out like a horror movie, then veers into the occult, and ends up in political intrigue. King Louis XV sends naturalist and taxidermist Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) to Gévaudan, a region in southern France, to help deal with a mysterious beast that is brutally killing people. Fronsac is accompanied by his faithful companion Mani, an Iroquois Indian. Fronsac and Mani take part in many action sequences, which are done martial-arts style (!), as they gradually discover the truth about the beast. Along the way, Fronsac becomes romantically involved with a beautiful young noblewoman. In its American theatrical release, this entertaining movie was in French with English subtitles, but on DVD you can optionally watch it dubbed into English.

Length: 94 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of action violence and some sensuality

Starring the wrestling superstar known as The Rock, this is an action-adventure film set in the ancient world before the building of the pyramids. Aided by the beautiful sorceress Cassandra (Kelly Hu), the evil warlord Memnon (Steven Brand) has conquered most of the known world. In an effort to stop Memnon, the few remaining peoples not under his control hire the assassin Mathayus (The Rock) to kill Cassandra. Mathayus sets out on his mission and eventually teams up with Balthazar (Michael Clarke Duncan) and others to invade Memnon's desert stronghold. The movie is mostly a series of special effects action sequences that showcase The Rock, but there's also a sprinkling of romance and humor. In addition, it turns out that the ancient world contains a lot of nubile women.

Selected Special DVD Features:

  • Feature Commentary With the Rock
  • Feature Commentary With Director Chuck Russell
