New Videos Coming Out This Week
The new releases scheduled for September 11, 2001, include Blow - Infinifilm Edition, Just Visiting, and The Tailor of Panama. Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz star in this dramatized version of the rise and fall of real-life drug dealer George Jung. Brought up in a working-class family in Massachusetts, Jung (Depp) moves as a young adult to Southern California. There Jung becomes reasonably wealthy by having marijuana brought into the U.S. from Mexico and selling it to college students. Jung has fun for a while, but things start to sour when his girlfriend (Franka Potente) dies and he serves time in prison on narcotics charges. Soon Jung graduates to dealing cocaine, becomes fabulously wealthy, and marries the gorgeous, but ill-tempered, Mirtha (Cruz). Eventually Jung’s life spirals precipitously downward as he gets caught in the crossfire between the Medellin drug cartel and the American criminal justice system.

Just Visiting

In this English-language comedy, a 12th-century French nobleman named Count Thibault (Jean Reno) and his servant Andre (Christian Clavier) are accidentally transported by a wizard to modern-day Chicago. In the Windy City, the Frenchmen meet Thibault’s descendant Julia (Christina Applegate), who has problems of her own. It turns out that Julia is the heiress of valuable Thibault family assets, and her boyfriend (Matthew Ross) is seeking to cheat her out of her inheritance. But Just Visiting is basically a fish-out-of-water comedy, deriving most of its humor from the behavior of the medieval men in a 21st-century city, such as attacking an S.U.V. and eating urinal cakes.

The Tailor of Panama
Tagline: "In a place this treacherous, what a good spy needs is a spy of his own."

Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush, and Jamie Lee Curtis star in this character-driven drama. As a result of indiscretions, renegade British spy Andy Osnard (Brosnan) has been relegated to sleazy Panama City. There he meets ex-convict Harry Pendel (Rush), the seemingly respectable tailor to Panama’s rich and powerful. Pendel is now married to a beautiful woman (Curtis), and she and their two children know nothing of his nefarious past. But Pendel desperately needs money, and the amoral Osnard willingly pays for information. Soon the tailor finds it convenient to feed Osnard invented information, and Osnard finds it convenient to pass that information on to his superiors as if it were factual. But the cynical game played by Osnard and Pendel leads to tragic consequences.
