Memento

cover art

Tagline: "Some memories are best forgotten."

Length: 113 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for violence, language and some drug content

Memento is a clever, noirish mystery yarn where much of the story is told more or less backwards. Early in the movie Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) is shown shooting a man’s brains out, and it’s soon revealed that Leonard is obsessed with avenging his wife’s brutal murder. But Leonard’s explanations of his actions may not be trustworthy because he claims he has suffered from short-term memory impairment ever since he received a severe head injury around the time of his wife’s death. To compensate for his memory problem, Leonard keeps track of people, places, and perceptions using Polaroid photos, notes, and tattoos. By the end of the film, the discriminating viewer has been given enough information to figure out what’s really going on.
