 DVD

Tagline: "Schmidt happens."

Length: 125 minutes
MPAA Rating: R for some language and brief nudity

Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates are terrific in this entertaining movie aimed at grownups and people who hope they will grow up someday. "About Schmidt" provides big laughs, but the film's overall tone is bittersweet. Nicholson creates an unforgettable character in Warren Schmidt, an Omaha insurance actuary who retires in his mid-60s. Then Warren's wife dies and after thrashing around for a while, he sets out alone on an RV trip. He eventually ends up in Denver for his daughter's wedding, and there he gets acquainted with his strange future in-laws, particularly the free-spirited mother (Bates) of the groom-to-be. Meanwhile, Warren periodically writes letters to an impoverished Tanzanian boy named Ndugu. But as a result of Warren's experiences, he somehow regains the will to get on with his life.
