Kurt Russell stars in this drama about corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department in 1992. Russell plays veteran detective Eldon Perry, and he has a green young partner named Bobby Keough (Scott Speedman). Perry and Keough work for Jack Van Meter (Brendan Gleeson), who directs them to frame two known criminals for murders committed during a convenience store robbery. Van Meter does this to protect the real murderers because they are important underworld contacts for him. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Holland (Ving Rhames) must decide whether to try to deal with some of the LAPD corruption or move on to a better job in another city. But soon Los Angeles erupts in violence when police officers are acquitted of beating Rodney King, even though the evidence against them seems overwhelming.

This drama was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, but won only one Oscar (Nicole Kidman for Best Actress). Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, and Ed Harris also give fine performances in the film. The movie interweaves the stories of three women in three different times and places, and the stories are linked through the novel "Mrs. Dalloway" by Virginia Woolf. One story shows Woolf (Kidman) writing her novel in England in the 1920s. A second story involves Laura Brown (Moore), an unhappy 1950s L.A. housewife. The third story takes place in 2001 New York and is about book editor Clarissa Vaughan (Streep) preparing a party for her friend (Harris), who is dying of AIDS. The movie tells tales of depression and suicide, but it's also about love and human interconnections.

A favorite with critics and festival audiences, this film features Adam Sandler, but it isn't much like those he usually stars in. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson ("Boogie Nights," "Magnolia"), "Punch-Drunk Love" might be considered an offbeat romantic comedy where Sandler is paired with Emily Watson. Sandler plays Barry Egan, a wholesaler of bathroom supplies who usually seems blandly pleasant to others. But he periodically erupts in violent outbursts, particularly under the hounding of his seven domineering sisters. Then Barry has a romance with sweet-natured Lena Leonard (Watson), and they enjoy a trip to Hawaii together. Also, Barry gets caught up in a phone-sex scam and is harassed by four blond brothers. This is a movie where it's hard to guess what will happen next.
