Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) is a busy, globetrotting FedEx employee who is obsessed with the efficient use of time. Noland is enjoying spending a Christmas holiday with his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) when he is notified that he must immediately fly to yet another overseas work assignment. But during Noland’s flight, the plane crashes, and he winds up marooned alone on a tropical island for years. Noland must use every bit of ingenuity he has just to stay alive, and the film shows him becoming lonely, emaciated, and unkempt before it goes on to reveal what eventually happens to him.

    O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Tagline: "They have a plan, but not a clue."

    Length: 106 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some violence and language

Based loosely on Homer’s The Odyssey, Joel and Ethan Coen’s comedy chronicles the adventures of three escaped convicts as they travel around the American South during the Great Depression. On their journey, Ulysses (George Clooney), Pete (John Turturro), and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) encounter a soothsayer, three seductive women washing clothes, and a one-eyed Bible salesman, not to mention "Baby Face" Nelson, a blues singer, and a Ku Klux Klan rally. When Ulysses finally reaches his wife Penny (Holly Hunter), she is preparing to wed another. I was both surprised and delighted when I saw O Brother on the big screen. Later, when I saw it on DVD, I actually enjoyed it even a little more. This kind of highly stylized, fable-like film often works well on a smaller screen, and I could catch some of the lines I laughed through the first time. I have a weakness for the Coen brothers’ movies, and this may well turn out to be one of my favorites. Music plays such an important part in O Brother that it almost feels like a musical.

    Selected DVD Special Features:

  • Behind-the-scenes featurette (includes an interview with the directors)
  • "Painting with Pixels" featurette
  • "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" music video
  • Widescreen anamorphic - 2.35:1
  • Formats Available: The above information refers to the DVD; this film is also available on VHS.
