New Video and DVD Releases

There are some interesting video/DVD releases slated for May 28, 2002, including "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001), "Traffic" - Criterion Collection (2000), and "The Patriot" - Superbit Deluxe Collection (2000). Faithfully adapted from the popular novel by J.K. Rowling, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" is an adventure film that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is raised by a mean aunt and uncle, but while still a boy he moves to a boarding school for wizards called Hogwarts. At the school, he befriends two other students, Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). The three kids have various adventures at Hogwarts, including learning about the Sorcerer's Stone, a small rock with magical powers. Also, the movie shows the school's peculiar sport known as Quidditch. Appearing in the film are Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, John Cleese, Fiona Shaw, Robbie Coltrane, John Hurt, and Zoe Wanamaker. Seventy-nine percent of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes liked "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

"Traffic" - Criterion Collection (2000)

MPAA Rating: R for pervasive drug content, strong language, violence, and some sexuality

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, "Traffic" is a hard-hitting drama about the illegal drug traffic from Mexico into the U.S. The movie, which stars Michael Douglas, Benicio Del Toro, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, chronicles the stories of law enforcement personnel and drug dealers on both sides of the Mexican-American border. Also, the film tells the tale of newly appointed U.S. drug czar Robert Wakefield (Douglas), who, even as he tries to spearhead the "war on drugs," discovers that his own teenage daughter is a junkie.
