In the 1970s, William Hundert (Kline) is the classics teacher at St. Benedict's, where he tries to use the academic work to instill a sense of morality in the students. This seems to work well until he encounters a student named Sedgewick Bell (Emile Hirsch), son of a U.S. Senator. With Hundert's encouragement, the troublesome Sedgewick improves so much that he has a shot at doing well in the school's classics competition, where the top three students will go on to the finals. When Hundert grades the papers, Sedgewick finishes fourth, prompting Hundert to reevaluate the responses, moving Sedgewick up to third. But Hundert's action sets in motion a train of events that will haunt him for years.

They go there to shoot a commercial where a downhill ski champion (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras) and daredevil snowboarders (Joe Absolom and Jana Pallaske) will be chased by an avalanche. However, the remote mountain lodge where they are staying turns out to be the hideout of a Serbian war criminal (Klaus Löwitsch), who mistakes the commercial crew for CIA agents and decides that none of them will be allowed to leave alive.
