August 27 - Video and DVD Releases

"High Crimes" (2002) DVD

This thriller stars Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. Claire Kubik (Judd) is an attorney who lives happily with her husband Tom (Jim Caviezel) near San Francisco. One day law enforcement officials suddenly arrest Tom, charging him with murdering innocent people in El Salvador years earlier. It emerges that Tom was a military operative there at the time, but his superiors may have been responsible for the deaths. Tom must face military justice, and Claire decides to defend him, enlisting the aid of an alcoholic former military lawyer named Charlie Grimes (Freeman). Soon Claire and Charlie find themselves unraveling a cover-up, hounded by those who want to obscure the truth. There are so many twists and turns in "High Crimes" that it may not be possible to be sure of exactly what really happened.

"The Queen of the Damned" (2002) DVD

A horror movie based on "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice, "The Queen of the Damned" is a sequel to "Interview With the Vampire" (1994). Again the main character is the vampire Lestat, who was portrayed by Tom Cruise in the earlier film, but played this time around by Stuart Townsend. It turns out that Lestat slept for 200 years after "Interview," and in "Queen" he awakes to become the lead singer in a rock band. Flouting long-standing tradition, Lestat openly proclaims himself to be a vampire, triggering a host of problems. In particular, the queen of all the vampires Akasha (played by the late Aaliyah) comes alive, is attracted to Lestat, and wants to rule the world with him. As we learn more about vampires from a researcher (Marguerite Moreau), powerful forces oppose both Lestat and the Queen.

"The Rookie" (2002) DVD

Based on a true story, this movie is a well-crafted baseball drama starring Dennis Quaid. Jim Morris (Quaid) is a high school baseball coach and science teacher in a small West Texas town. Now thirty-something, happily married, and the father of three, Jim has long since given up his dream of pitching in the major leagues. But kids on Jim's high school team strike a deal with him: if they make it to the state playoffs, he must again try out for professional baseball. When the high schoolers fulfill their part of the bargain, Jim winds up in the minor leagues, where he's years older than any other player. Every day becomes a struggle for Jim, his wife (Rachel Griffiths) is not entirely happy, and neither is his stern father (Brian Cox). Eighty-two percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics liked "The Rookie."
