"Formula 51" (2002)

Samuel L. Jackson stars in this violent, foul-mouthed, jokey British crime movie. Jackson plays Elmo McElroy, a kilt-wearing rogue pharmacist who has invented a drug many times as powerful as heroin or cocaine. After tangling with the Los Angeles drug lord known as The Lizard (Meat Loaf), Elmo travels to Liverpool. He is pursued by Dakota (Emily Mortimer), a hit woman who works for The Lizard. In Liverpool, Elmo teams up with Felix (Robert Carlyle), and they deal with miscellaneous criminals and cops while trying to sell Elmo's formula. Felix is an avid soccer fan, and the film's climax takes place at the Liverpool stadium. Along the way there are various shootings, explosions, and car chases, as well as soccer-related humor and speculation about what's under Jackson's kilt.

    "Igby Goes Down" (2002)

This story of an adolescent trying to survive growing up in a dysfunctional family has reminded many of "The Catcher in the Rye." In "Igby Goes Down," Kieran Culkin plays Igby Slocumb, an intelligent 17-year-old who has been kicked out of several prep schools. Igby's mother (Susan Sarandon) is self-absorbed and unlikable, his schizophrenic father (Bill Pullman) is in a mental institution, and his older brother (Ryan Phillippe) is cold and overbearing. When Igby escapes from military school, his godfather (Jeff Goldblum) arranges for him to stay in a bohemian part of New York. There Igby comes to know his godfather's mistress (Amanda Peet) and a Bennington student (Claire Danes), and he must deal with issues that include drugs and sex as he tries to find himself.

    "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002)

Reese Witherspoon is charming in this fluffy romantic comedy that was a big box-office hit in its theatrical release. Witherspoon plays twenty-something Melanie Carmichael, a successful New York fashion designer. When Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), the handsome son of a prominent family, proposes to Melanie, she wants to marry him. But she's still married to Jake (Josh Lucas), a guy from her hometown of Pigeon Creek, Alabama, although they've been estranged for years. Melanie goes back to her hometown to try to arrange a hasty divorce, but Jake refuses because he hopes to win her back. As Melanie rediscovers the joys of small town life, her feelings for Jake are rekindled, and she must choose whether she'd rather be with Andrew in New York or Jake in Pigeon Creek.

    "Ultimate X" (2002)

In its theatrical release, this documentary from the all-sports cable network ESPN showed only in the large IMAX format and was only 40 minutes long. The film is composed primarily of footage shot at the 2001 Summer X Games in Philadelphia. The letter X here is said to be derived from the word Extreme. The X Games consist of events that typically involve people on things like motorcycles, skateboards, and bicycles traveling at very high rates of speed under dangerous conditions. The events have names like Moto X, Street Luge, Freestyle Skateboarding, and Stunt BMX. The documentary intersperses highlights of the events with interviews of the competitors, including skateboarder Tony Hawk. The film appears to be made in a way intended to try to broaden the audience for the X Games.
