Let's take a look at the new video and DVD releases slated for the second week of December, 2002.

December 10 - Video and DVD Releases

"Cherish" (2002)

Robin Tunney gives a nice performance in this little film that combines elements of drama, comedy, and thriller. Tunney plays Zoe, an attractive, socially awkward, twenty-something single woman. One night a masked man forces the drunken Zoe to drive, her car kills a cop, and the masked man flees. Zoe is arrested and confined to her walkup apartment wearing an electronic ankle bracelet that sets off alarms if she goes beyond a certain distance. Zoe passes the time by listening to old pop tunes like "Cherish" on the radio, and she is periodically visited by Daly (Tim Blake Nelson), who maintains her monitoring device. She also befriends her wheelchair-bound, gay neighbor Max (Ricardo Gil), but mostly she does everything she can to try to find out about the masked man and clear her name.

    "Halloween: Resurrection" (2002)

This is the eighth movie in the "Halloween" series of horror films, and as always the boogeyman character is mass murderer Michael Myers. This time around an Internet entrepreneur (Busta Rhymes) organizes an event where six young adults will spend Halloween night in Myers' childhood home. Each of the six is wired with a small video camera so that people can watch the proceedings live on the Internet. However, it turns out that Myers is also in the house, and he begins to murder the six young people one by one, while those remaining alive try to find a way to survive the psychotic killer. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role from previous "Halloween" movies and is apparently killed off, but then many people thought that Myers was dead at the end of the seventh "Halloween" film.

    "K-19: The Widowmaker" (2002)

Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson star in this suspense drama about a troubled Russian nuclear submarine. The movie is set in 1961 and inspired by an actual Cold War event. K-19 is a Russian sub whose crew dubs it "the Widowmaker" because several men die while working on it even before it is launched. On its maiden voyage, K-19 is commanded by Capt. Vostrikov (Ford), and the Executive Officer is Capt. Polenin (Neeson). A major problem arises at sea involving K-19's nuclear reactors, and Vostrikov and Polenin, both competent and strong-willed officers, disagree about the proper course of action. But while both officers are concerned for the safety of the crew, they understand the need to keep the Russian technology secret, and both are aware that an explosion on board may trigger nuclear war.

    "Like Mike" (2002)

This comedy is about a young teenage boy who becomes a professional basketball star. Calvin Cambridge (rapper Lil' Bow Wow) is a boy of about 14 who lives in an orphanage, where he enjoys playing basketball even though he is less than five feet tall. Calvin happens to come into possession of a pair of Nike sneakers that were donated to the orphanage, and a member of the staff thinks they once belonged to a famous basketball player. When Calvin finds the initials "MJ" inside the shoes, he concludes they were once worn by NBA great Michael Jordan. Soon Calvin discovers that when he wears the sneakers, he plays basketball "like Mike." It's not long before Calvin creates a sensation by becoming a key player on an NBA team, but he still longs to be a part of a family.

    "Stuart Little 2" (2002)

This sequel to "Stuart Little" (1999) blends animation with live action and is another example of a family film that most adults won't mind watching with children. Stuart Little (voice of Michael J. Fox) is an animated mouse who, despite the tremendous disparity in size, has been adopted by a human family, the members of which are portrayed by live actors. This time around, Stuart is driving along in his tiny sports car when he encounters a little yellow bird named Margalo (voice of Melanie Griffith). Stuart and Margalo become great friends, and when she disappears, he suspects the evil Falcon (voice of James Woods) is responsible. Aided by the family cat Snowbell (voice of Nathan Lane), Stuart sets out to try to locate Margalo, and along the way he has lots of adventures.
