“Catch Me If You Can” (2002)

Steven Spielberg directed this lighthearted, entertaining film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. The movie is based on Frank Abagnale Jr.'s book about his experiences as a con man back in the 1960s. When Frank (DiCaprio) is about 16, his parents split up after his father (Christopher Walken) gets into deep financial trouble. Young Frank sets out on his own, eventually cashing forged checks for millions of dollars. Before reaching his 19th birthday, he successfully passes himself off as an airline pilot, a physician, and an attorney. But young Frank must keep on the move to avoid being apprehended by FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Hanks). Along the way, Frank gets involved with two attractive young women (Jennifer Garner, Amy Adams) and meets a New Orleans prosecutor (Martin Sheen).

    “Comedian” (2002)

This documentary follows veteran standup comic Jerry Seinfeld as he develops an all-new act to perform live on stages. Filmed over the course of a year, the movie shows Seinfeld talking with other professional entertainers, such as Chris Rock, Colin Quinn, Robert Klein, Jay Leno, Garry Shandling, and Bill Cosby. Also, the film shows Seinfeld preparing new material and trying it out in front of small test audiences. The movie gives insight into the huge amount of hard work that goes into making people laugh, even for an experienced, successful comedian like Jerry Seinfeld, who agonizes over every word. By way of counterpoint, the documentary also shows some footage of Orny Adams, a comic who appears to be up-and-coming, as he tries to gain wider recognition.

    “25th Hour” (2002)

Spike Lee directed this drama that stars Edward Norton. Set in New York, the film chronicles the last day of freedom of drug dealer Monty Brogan (Norton) before he begins serving a seven-year prison term. Monty spends much of the time with his best friends, high school teacher Jacob Elinsky (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and investment banker Frank Slaughtery (Barry Pepper). In addition, he spends some time with his father (Brian Cox), a retired fireman who runs a bar. Along the way, Monty tries to figure out if his girlfriend (Rosario Dawson) turned him in. He also must wrap things up with some Russian mobsters and find a home for a dog he rescued. Meanwhile, Elinsky must deal with his attraction to one of his students (Anna Paquin). There's not much of a plot—this is more of a mood piece.

    “Adaptation” (2002) Superbit Collection

"Adaptation" was nominated for four Academy Awards and won for Best Supporting Actor (Chris Cooper). The film stars Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep, was directed by Spike Jonze, and written by Charlie Kaufman. This is an offbeat comedy about adapting a book into a movie, and it freely mixes fact with fiction. In "Adaptation," Charlie Kaufman (Cage) is a neurotic screenwriter who is hired to write a screenplay based on a book by Susan Orlean (Streep). The book, titled "The Orchid Thief," is about a colorful man named John Laroche (Cooper). Charlie's frustration drives him close to madness as he tries to adapt the book, which he comes to believe to be unfilmable. Meanwhile, Charlie's twin brother Donald (also played by Nicolas Cage) makes big bucks by churning out a formulaic screenplay.

    “Antwone Fisher” (2002)

Based on a true story, this emotional drama was directed by and stars Denzel Washington. However, the central role is played by newcomer Derek Luke, who gives a fine performance. Antwone Fisher (Luke) is a troubled young African-American sailor in the U.S. Navy who frequently gets into fights. He is ordered to see psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Washington), and the result of his sessions will determine whether or not he will be discharged. Davenport and Fisher gradually make progress, and along the way, Fisher begins to date a nice woman named Cheryl (Joy Bryant). Eventually, Davenport advises Fisher he must come to terms with his past, and Fisher sets off on a journey to do just that. But Davenport has some problems, too, and his working with Fisher is good for both men.

Soon the Nazis occupy Poland, and eventually Szpilman's family and nearly all the Jews in Warsaw are stripped of their possessions and forced to move into a walled-in ghetto. Marco (Darío Grandinetti) is a journalist who has a romantic relationship with a bullfighter named Lydia (Rosario Flores), then he cares for her when she falls into a coma as a result of being gored. While caring for the two comatose women, the two men develop a friendship.
