Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates are terrific in this entertaining movie aimed at grownups and people who hope they will grow up someday. "About Schmidt" provides big laughs, but the film's overall tone is bittersweet. Nicholson creates an unforgettable character in Warren Schmidt, an Omaha insurance actuary who retires in his mid-60s. Then Warren's wife dies and after thrashing around for a while, he sets out alone on an RV trip. He eventually ends up in Denver for his daughter's wedding, and there he gets acquainted with his strange future in-laws, particularly the free-spirited mother (Bates) of the groom-to-be. Meanwhile, Warren periodically writes letters to an impoverished Tanzanian boy named Ndugu. But as a result of Warren's experiences, he somehow regains the will to get on with his life. Nominated for six Oscars, this English-language biopic about celebrated 20th-century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo stars Salma Hayek in the title role. Frida's husband was legendary Mexican muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), and together they were Marxist bohemians who led tumultuous lives. Both had extramarital lovers, and Frida's included Russian leader Leon Trotsky (Geoffrey Rush) and entertainer Josephine Baker. Famous historical figures appearing in the movie include photographer Tina Modotti (Ashley Judd) and painter David Alfaro Siqueiros (Antonio Banderas). The film also deals with Nelson Rockefeller (Edward Norton) having Rivera's Rockefeller Center mural destroyed. The movie centers around Frida's troubled marriage, but also gives some insight into her painting. Selected Special DVD Features:

This grim movie about Detroit narcotics detectives stars Jason Patric and Ray Liotta. Eighteen months later, Nick is assigned to work with veteran detective Henry Oak (Liotta). This drama was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture, but won only one Oscar (Nicole Kidman for Best Actress). Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, and Ed Harris also give fine performances in the film. The movie interweaves the stories of three women in three different times and places, and the stories are linked through the novel "Mrs. Dalloway" by Virginia Woolf. One story shows Woolf (Kidman) writing her novel in England in the 1920s. A second story involves Laura Brown (Moore), an unhappy 1950s L.A. housewife. The third story takes place in 2001 New York and is about book editor Clarissa Vaughan (Streep) preparing a party for her friend (Harris), who is dying of AIDS. The movie tells tales of depression and suicide, but it's also about love and human interconnections. Selected Special DVD Features:

A favorite with critics and festival audiences, this film features Adam Sandler, but it isn't much like those he usually stars in. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson ("Boogie Nights," "Magnolia"), "Punch-Drunk Love" might be considered an offbeat romantic comedy where Sandler is paired with Emily Watson. Sandler plays Barry Egan, a wholesaler of bathroom supplies who usually seems blandly pleasant to others. But he periodically erupts in violent outbursts, particularly under the hounding of his seven domineering sisters. Then Barry has a romance with sweet-natured Lena Leonard (Watson), and they enjoy a trip to Hawaii together. Also, Barry gets caught up in a phone-sex scam and is harassed by four blond brothers. This is a movie where it's hard to guess what will happen next. Selected Special DVD Features:
