"Erin Brockovich"
Just as everybody expected, Julia Roberts brought home a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the title role. When accepting the award, Roberts showed an Erin Brockovich-like assertiveness by telling the conductor to back off and put his baton down so she could finish her speech.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" won four Academy Awards, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Many expected Ang Lee to get the Best Director nod, especially since he had previously won the Directors Guild of America award for this film, but instead the Oscar went to Steven Soderbergh for "Traffic."

"Pollock"
One of the surprises of the Academy Award ceremony was that Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Perhaps it was unexpected because many havent seen the film. Her portrayal of Lee Krasner, the long-suffering wife of abstract-expressionist painter Jackson Pollock, was nothing short of stunning. "Pollock" is a biopic based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Jackson Pollock: An American Saga" by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith.

"Almost Famous"
The Oscar for Best Original Screenplay went to Cameron Crowe (the writer/director of "Jerry Maguire") for his semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy who gets assigned by "Rolling Stone" to write an article about an up-and-coming rock band.
