Selected February Releases on Video/DVD

February 6

Dr. T & the Women

Robert Altman's fable-like comedy/drama can spark heated debate. It’s the kind of movie that you’ll either love or hate, but either way chances are good you’ll end up talking about it. The title character (played by Richard Gere) is a Dallas gynecologist who puts women on so high a pedestal it’s inevitable something will eventually bring his vision of women down to earth. Yet, even after his illusions about them are dealt a shattering blow, it still remains dubious that he has learned anything after all. Watch out for a slightly surreal, dream-like ending that’s open to a variety of interpretations.

Get Carter

Jack Carter (Sylvester Stallone) returns to Seattle for his brother's funeral and discovers he was murdered.

Woman on Top

This star vehicle for Penelope Cruz was panned by most critics, yet still managed to charm a few. Fans of this charismatic star will probably want to see it yet again on video/DVD.

Bring it On

A high-school comedy about a head cheerleader who discovers that her team’s hip-hop routine was lifted from an inner-city high school.

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle

Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle Moose return in this spin-off of the 1960s cartoon cold-war satire, and once again they have to find a way somehow outwit Boris (Jason Alexander), Natasha (Rene Russo), and Fearless Leader (Robert De Niro). The film combines live action and animation.

Bedazzled

A lightweight, easygoing, mildly entertaining comedy that retells the Faust legend and brings new meaning to the old saying "be careful what you wish for because you just might get it." Brendan Fraser stars as a nerdy guy who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for a handful of wishes. Of course with Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil, there are probably a lot of men out there who would jump at the chance to sign on the dotted line. By the way, this film is actually a remake of 1967 film of the same name that starred Dudley Moore and Peter Cook.

The Contender

In this political thriller, Laine Hanson (Joan Allen) is nominated for Vice President of the United States, only to become the victim of a smear campaign during the confirmation process. Written and directed by film critic Rod Lurie. Joan Allen is an Academy-Award nominee for Best Actress.

Nurse Betty

A dark comedy that examines the idea that reality can be a little overrated, especially when life becomes so skewed that it could be time to consider options other than remaining completely sane. The graphic violence and wild mood swings are sometimes off-putting, but if your sensibilities can handle this kind of thing, the sharp script and solid acting make it well worth seeing. Renee Zellweger won a Golden Globe award for her performance in the title role.

The Original Kings of Comedy

Spike Lee's concert film follows the Kings of Comedy tour.
