The Bottom Line
Season seven was David David Duchovny's last full season on "The X-Files," and the lack of his charismatic presence in many of the episodes made the season eight DVDs a bit of a disappointment to me. And yet, although this was far from being one of the shows strongest seasons, I still enjoyed watching this TV show on DVD.
Pros
- Mixes horror, sci-fi, and film noir to create an evocative mood
- John Doggett (Robert Patrick) is an interesting character in his own right
- Visually imaginative, high production values and strong scripts
Cons
- Show lost energy because of David Duchovny's diminished presence in season eight
- Dramatic line is sometimes murky (could be a pro)
- Languorously paced at times (could be a pro)

Guide Review - "The X-Files - The Complete Eighth Season" DVD Review
Season seven was David David Duchovny's last full season on "The X-Files." The show lost a lot of energy in season eight because of the diminished presence of his character Fox Mulder. Because of this, the season eight DVDs were a bit of a disappointment to me. However, whats good about "The X-Files" doesnt hinge on just one character, and theres still a lot to like about this series. Much of what has always pulled me into the series is still there, including the way "The X-Files" mixes elements of horror, sci-fi, and film noir to create an evocative mood. Because of the visually imaginative photography, high production values, and strong scripts, "The X-Files" is still often as dramatic and engaging as many feature films. Although nobody can really replace David Duchovnys charismatic presence in this series, Robert Patrick as John Doggett is still an interesting character in his own right. Although this was far from being one of the shows strongest seasons, I still enjoyed watching this TV show on DVD.
