Guide Review - "Chicago" DVD Review
With its entertaining mix of comedy, dance, and music, along with top-notch performances by charismatic actors, I found watching Chicago on DVD to be a real treat. Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones play song-and-dance women charged with committing murders in Prohibition-era Chicago, and Richard Gere plays a high-powered defense lawyer. Queen Latifah has a notable supporting role as a prison matron. I think Chicago, despite its period setting, has bite and resonance today because of the cult of celebrity that pop culture has always attached to murder trials. Although the film is not fully satisfying as a musical and is unnecessarily choppy, I found it enormously entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny throughout.
