Casablanca played in New York starting around Thanksgiving of 1942. However, the film did not play Los Angeles until 1943, and therefore under Academy rules, it could not receive an Oscar until the Awards Ceremony of 1944.
At the 1944 Ceremony, Casablanca won Best Picture (producer Hal B. Wallis), Best Director (Michael Curtiz), and Best Screenplay (Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch). The movie was also nominated for Best Actor (Humphrey Bogart) and Best Supporting Actor (Claude Rains) and received nominations for cinematography, film editing, and music. Ingrid Bergman was not nominated for her work in Casablanca, but she was nominated as Best Actress for her performance in For Whom the Bell Tolls.
