Guide Review - "Brotherhood of the Wolf" DVD

Set in 18th-century France, this film starts out like a horror movie and ends up in political intrigue. The king sends taxidermist Fronsac to Gévaudan, a region in southern France, to help deal with a mysterious beast that is brutally killing people. Fronsac is accompanied by his faithful companion Mani, an Iroquois Indian. Fronsac and Mani take part in many action sequences, done martial-arts style, as they gradually discover the truth about the beast. What I like best about this movie is how it refuses to be confined to a single genre. I enjoyed the locations, sets, and costumes a lot, too. Also, I found the movie's handling of its theme of trusting reason over emotion interesting.
