"About a Boy" DVD Review I found "About a Boy" to be one of those rare films that is warm, human, funny, and entertaining from start to finish. It has far fewer clichés than other recent comedies. "Barbershop" DVD Review I laughed a lot in Barbershop and felt very good at the end of the movie, but its very lightweight. "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" Criterion Collection DVD I love this complex film's style and wit, its vibrant use of Technicolor, and Roger Livesey's tour-de-force performance. "War and Peace" DVD I cant say "War and Peace" (1956) is an example of great filmmaking, but I do think it's worth watching. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Third Season" (1999) DVDs I enjoyed the entertaining mix of horror, comedy, and drama in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Third Season" and expect fans of this popular TV show to like the DVDs even better than I did. "Austin Powers in Goldmember" Infinifilm Edition DVD I enjoyed all three Austin Powers movies, and I think this is the best of the three. Although there is some fairly gross humor, I laughed out loud throughout this film. "Sunset Boulevard" DVD I think "Sunset Boulevard" is a great and unusual movie, and it ranks high on my own personal list of the greatest films ever made. "Roman Holiday" Special Collector's Edition DVD I find "Roman Holiday" a bit on the wispy side, but I love its charismatic stars, elegant direction, and enchanting locations. Y tu mamá también DVD I loved this high-spirited, unusual, and fun art-house movie, which I found to be artistic, cinematic, and thought-provoking. "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" Two-Disc DVD Set The 1982 version of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a great classic film, and the 2002 update is the best version of this movie yet. "Spider-Man" Two-Disc DVD Set I liked the first hour of "Spider-Man" and the ending, but in between I was sometimes bored. "Insomnia" DVD I found the psychological thriller "Insomnia" compelling throughout and particularly enjoyed Al Pacinos performance in the leading role. "When We Were Kings" DVD I found When We Were Kings to be highly entertaining, but I learned very little and didnt gain much insight. "The Sopranos Season 3" Four-Disc DVD Set The HBO television show The Sopranos is the best dramatic TV series I have ever seen, and Season 3 maintains the high standards set during the first two seasons. "La Terra trema" DVD "La Terra trema" captures the theme of the exploitation of the weak by the strong better than any film I know. The images in this movie are unforgettable, and I give it my highest recommendation. "Vanya on 42nd Street" DVD "Vanya on 42nd Street" is a richly textured, beautifully acted study of human nature and subtle, complex family dynamics. "Brotherhood of the Wolf" DVD "Brotherhood of the Wolf" is a fascinating mélange of movie genres, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. "Monsoon Wedding" DVD "Monsoon Wedding" is a joyous celebration of life. When I watched this movie on DVD recently, I found it to be enchanting. "The Count of Monte Cristo" DVD "The Count of Monte Cristo" is basically an entertaining, old-fashioned swashbuckler, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. "Big Fat Liar" DVD "Big Fat Liar" is a good-hearted comedy that is laugh-out-loud funny throughout. Although this movie is aimed at kids, I expect that most adults will find it entertaining. "Pulp Fiction" Collector's Edition DVDs "Pulp Fiction" is a dark, violent comedy that satirizes our expectations of a crime drama. I love Tarantinos dialogue and the way he tweaked crime movie clichés into something fresh. The Rookie DVD I was surprised how much this film about a Texas high school baseball coach moved me. Although schmaltzy at times, this was one of the best family-oriented movies Ive seen in many years. "We Were Soldiers" DVD This movie is heavy-handed and corny at times, but for me the importance of the subject matter and the way Gibson brings Moore to life on the screen far outweigh the film's flaws. "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" Two-Disc DVD Set Although I found "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" to be flawed, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure. "Lewis Black: Unleashed" DVD Review I thoroughly enjoyed "Lewis Black: Unleashed," and my only complaint is that it was so funny, I hated for it to end. |
