“About Schmidt” DVD Review
I got some big laughs out of this film, but it’s not so much a comedy as a bittersweet character study. Nicholson and Bates are great, and I like the movie’s wry look at contemporary American life.

"Once Upon a Time in America" DVD Review
I was mesmerized by the visual flow and haunting music of “Once Upon a Time in America.” I think the movie occasionally goes too far over the top, but it packs one whale of an emotional wallop.

“The Pianist” DVD Review
“The Pianist” eschews easy emotional connections and refuses to oversimplify, and I think it is one of the most powerful Holocaust films ever made.

"Frida" DVD Review
While I think "Frida" is only so-so as a character study or as a drama, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a historical spectacle and as a love story.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Fourth Season" (1999) DVDs
I had a lot of fun watching "Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Season Four" on DVD. And I suspect fans of this entertaining and imaginative series will probably enjoy the DVDs even more than I did.

"Dark Angel – Season One" Six-Disc DVD Set
“Dark Angel” is entertaining and especially good-looking on DVD. I liked the sci-fi noir feeling of “Dark Angel,” yet the overall story never completely drew me in.

“Talk to Her” DVD Review
I loved this inventive Spanish-language film, which is written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar. I’ll admit it’s strange and unsettling, but I found it quite moving.

"Antwone Fisher" DVD Review
Although the treatment of this inspiring story is somewhat formulaic, I found it very emotionally involving. This earnest and heartwarming film brought tears to my eyes.

“L’Atalante” DVD Review
“L’Atalante” is a cinepoem that is infused with an evocative mood of lyrical, bittersweet romance, and I think it is one of the greatest movies ever made.

“25th Hour” DVD Review
"25th Hour" is one of Spike Lee's most emotionally powerful films. It's a flawed masterpiece, but when I see movies like this, it reminds me of cinema's power as an art form.

"The X-Files - The Complete Seventh Season" DVD Review
Interesting characters, an evocative mix of horror, sci-fi, and film noir, along with a visual sense that is as imaginative as a feature film make for a thoroughly enjoyable DVD collection.

“Catch Me If You Can” DVD Review
This is one of the most entertaining films I've seen in a long time. DiCaprio and Hanks give fine performances, and I like what Spielberg did with the relationship between their characters.

“Bloody Sunday” DVD Review
I found this docudrama compelling and especially liked its realism and immediacy. Even though it would have made the movie longer, I wanted to see more development of Ivan Cooper's character.

"The Crime of Padre Amaro" DVD Review
I like "The Crime of Padre Amaro" for its memorable imagery, fascinating characters, and noirish feel. But I’ll admit that it sometimes feels like a soap opera and is occasionally campy.

“Standing in the Shadows of Motown” DVD Review
Entertaining pop music, an affectionate portrait of 13 interesting men, and insight into the 1960s American scene make this one of the very best documentaries I have ever seen.

"Spirited Away" DVD Review
I think that both kids and their parents will enjoy watching this movie. "Spirited Away" is a masterpiece of animation and an unusual one.

"Far From Heaven" DVD Review
“Far From Heaven” combines fine acting, stunning cinematography, good dialogue, and a lush score in one of the most engaging movies I’ve seen recently.

“Bang the Drum Slowly” DVD Review
I enjoyed “Bang the Drum Slowly,” although it was a bit of a guilty pleasure. This is an unusual film in that it focuses on the friendship between two men and dares to show their sensitive sides.

“Three Colors” Trilogy DVD Review
I think Kieslowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy is an innovative masterpiece of world cinema that works both intellectually and humanistically.

"White Oleander" DVD Review
I thought the story was flawed because the over-the-top melodrama destroyed its credibility. But the acting combined with the strong sense of place made for a film I think is worth seeing.

"Mostly Martha" DVD Review
Some have typed this film as a food movie, but I consider it to be more of a character study. I enjoyed the character development showing one woman going through a subtle but meaningful change.

“One Hour Photo” DVD Review
I found this suspense movie to be truly creepy and horrifying. What made the film compelling to me was the portrait of modern loneliness and disconnection it created.

"All About Eve" DVD
A superb screenplay, arguably the sharpest dialogue in any movie, and richly developed characters make for one of the best of the classic Hollywood films.

"Trouble in Paradise" Criterion Collection DVD
I rate "Trouble in Paradise" as one of the handful of greatest comedies ever made. This film has been hard to see for decades, and this DVD is a must-have for the serious cinephile.

"The Bourne Identity" DVD Review
I found this movie to be well-paced with exciting action sequences and charming European locations. If you’re just looking for pure entertainment, I highly recommend this film.
