"Singin' in the Rain" DVD Review
To my mind, few movie musicals can even come close to the feeling of enchantment that "Singin' in the Rain" delivers. Both the sound and picture quality on the DVD are exceptional, adding to the delight of watching this masterpiece. In addition, the bonus materials enormously enhanced my enjoyment of the box set.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" DVD Review
"2001: A Space Odyssey" is one of my all-time favorites. It's one of the films that started me on a life-long love of the movies. To my mind, "2001" is one of a handful of quintessential large-screen movies, and so I was a little worried about seeing it on DVD. But after watching it on DVD recently, I was pleasantly surprised that much of its visual brilliance and grandeur still came through.

"Tokyo Story" DVD Review
Universal in theme, humanistic, and accessible, "Tokyo Story" is one of the greatest masterpieces of world cinema. To my mind, this movie’s incredible power comes from its seeming simplicity, which allows emotions to build slowly and subtly, much as they do in real life. It's a mark of Ozu's genius that by the time the film reaches its end, it moves me with a power that feels more like reality experienced than make-believe.

"Highlander - Season Three" DVD Review
Although this TV show on DVD is uneven and some episodes didn't draw me in completely, I found that "Highlander Season Three" was worth watching on DVD. In addition, the DVD set has bonus materials that fans of the series will be interested in.

"X2: X-Men United" DVD
I'd never mistake "X2: X-Men United" for high art, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

"Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio" DVDs
I was thoroughly entertained by "Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio," a two-disc concert DVD set of the band’s performance at the 2001 Rio de Janeiro festival.

"Lennon Legend" DVD
This is an impressive collection of John Lennon's music that is beautifully coordinated with a variety of footage and music videos.

"Coldplay Live 2003" DVD and CD Set
I was thoroughly entertained by the "Coldplay Live 2003" DVD and CD set. This is a must-have for Coldplay enthusiasts and may create some new Coldplay fans as well.

"Apu Trilogy" DVD Review
The "Apu Trilogy" is a beautiful, moving, and humanistic masterwork of world cinema, and every time I see it, I am reminded of film's potential as an art form. "Pather Panchali," "Aparajito," and "The World of Apu" are all works of great beauty and emotional power.

"Adaptation" DVD Review
I loved "Adaptation" for its wit and humor: it is one of the most original films I've seen in a long time. The acting is superb and alone would be enough to carry the movie.

"Upright Citizens Brigade – The Complete First Season" DVD Review
"Upright Citizens Brigade – The Complete First Season" can be laugh-out-loud funny and even side-splitting at times. I found this two-disc DVD set to be a real treat.

"The X-Files - The Complete Eighth Season" DVD Review
Season seven was David David Duchovny's last full season on "The X-Files," and the lack of his charismatic presence in many of the episodes made the season eight DVDs a bit of a disappointment to me. And yet, although this was far from being one of the show’s strongest seasons, I still enjoyed watching this TV show on DVD.

"Strangers With Candy - Season Two" DVD Review
"Strangers With Candy – Season Two" on DVD is a funny, deliciously dark, and often politically incorrect spoof of "after school" TV specials. I was entertained by the show’s mix of humor and tongue-in-cheek melodrama.

"The David Lean Collection" DVD Review
I can’t think of another DVD box set that provides so much entertainment that will be enjoyed by almost anyone. Two of the films—“Lawrence of Arabia” and “The Bridge on the River Kwai”—are great, and the third—“A Passage to India”—is very good indeed.

"Dracula" (1931) DVD Review
There have many movie adaptations of the Dracula story, but to my mind, nothing tops the 1931 classic starring Bela Lugosi in the title role. Of course, circa 1931 special effects don't match the visual wizardry of modern movies, but the eerie atmosphere this film creates in my imagination is perhaps the most potent effect ever invented.

"Metropolis" (1927) DVD Review
I give this spectacular film my highest possible recommendation, not because of its great historical importance, but because I find it spellbinding.

"Hercules the Legendary Journeys - Season Two" DVD Review
This television series on DVD creates a mythic world that is not at all believable, and the stories have a simplicity that is almost cartoon-like. Yet the show’s tongue-in-cheek attitude and sense of good-natured fun is hard to resist.

"The Best of 'Insomniac With Dave Attell' Uncensored Vol. 2" DVD Review
I found "The Best of 'Insomniac With Dave Attell' Uncensored Vol. 2" to be funny, unpredictable, and strange. I was especially impressed by the show’s use of a cinema vérité style to cover a late-night milieu that often seems both true-to-life and surreal.

"Dark Angel – Season Two" DVD Review
I enjoyed watching the season two DVDs, and especially liked the sci-fi noir feeling of the shows and the inventive imagination that I’ve come to expect in this TV series created by James Cameron.

"Whale Rider" DVD Review
This is a terrific feel-good film, but it simplifies complex issues, losing emotional depth in the process. The film’s cinematic beauty makes up for a lot, as does Keisha Castle-Hughes’ performance.

"The Matrix Reloaded" DVD Review
I was dazzled by the visual sense of "The Matrix Reloaded" and by its highly stylized action sequences, but I didn't become emotionally involved because the film was more about style than substance.

"28 Days Later" DVD Review
Although the dynamite first act of "28 Days Later" doesn't deliver on its promises, I still recommend this movie because it is a compelling drama with genuinely scary moments.

"A Mighty Wind" DVD Review
There are lots of laughs in "A Mighty Wind," but the edge of the humor in this film is a little gentler than in some of Guest’s others. He’s made funnier films, but this is one of my favorites.

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" DVD Review
It’s great to own this film on DVD. I’ve seen it many times before, but there’s always a joke I’ve missed or a sequence I love and simply want to see yet another time.

"Punch-Drunk Love" DVD Review
I really enjoyed the odd combination of lyricism and edginess in this offbeat romantic comedy. I found the film’s quirky characters, surprising narrative, and stunning visual style very engaging.
