This is a terrific feel-good film, but it simplifies complex issues, losing emotional depth in the process. The films cinematic beauty makes up for a lot, as does Keisha Castle-Hughes performance.

Guide Review - "Whale Rider" DVD Review
Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) is a 12-year-old girl who dreams of becoming the leader of her people, a Maori tribe in a beautiful part of present-day New Zealand. Her grandfather is the current chief, and she seems worthy, but tradition works against her. However, the movie for the most part avoids clichés and handles this material in unexpected ways. I think "Whale Rider" is terrific as a feel-good film, but to me, it's a good movie that misses being a great one. It simplifies complex issues, losing emotional depth in the process. The sheer cinematic beauty of the film makes up for a lot, as does the charismatic performance of child actress Keisha Castle-Hughes. The use of Maori actors gives the feel of a culture in transition.
