"Something's Gotta Give" DVD Review

About.com Rating four out of Five

By Ivana Redwine, About.com

The Bottom Line

"Something’s Gotta Give" is very lightweight, has glossy Hollywood production values, and feels like a slick Broadway play opened out. Still, I found the film both romantic and laugh-out-loud funny. I was dazzled by the star power of Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson, and I thought they had great screen chemistry.
Pros
  • Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson give dazzling performances and have good screen chemistry
  • I found the movie both romantic and laugh-out-loud funny
  • Lavish sets, charming locations, high production values, and evocative music on soundtrack
Cons
  • A bit long considering how fluffy the material is
  • Not particularly cinematic—feels like a stage play opened out
  • Characters and plot are not believable

Guide Review - "Something's Gotta Give" DVD Review

I had such a good time watching "Something's Gotta Give" that I didn’t much care that I never really believed the characters or the plot. I was dazzled by Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson as the leads in this romantic comedy, and I thought they had great screen chemistry. I found myself more than willing to overlook the movie's shortcomings because of its star power.

Nicholson plays Harry Sanborn, a 63-year-old confirmed bachelor who has dated women in their 20s for four decades. But taking Viagra nearly gets Harry in big trouble when he has a mild heart attack. According to the movie, the combination of nitroglycerin and Viagra can be fatal.

While recuperating, Harry gets into a sexual relationship with Erica Barry (Keaton), a divorced playwright who’s around 55. Their romance ends badly after only about a week, then she and a 36-year-old physician (Keanu Reeves) become lovers. But the play she writes about her brief fling with Harry becomes a smash hit, and Broadway audiences laugh big when the character she modeled on Harry dies in the second act.

"Something's Gotta Give" is very lightweight, has glossy Hollywood production values, and feels like a stage play opened out. Still, I found the film both romantic and laugh-out-loud funny. Also, I believe people who really get into this movie will want to hear the audio commentaries on the DVD, particularly the remarks by Jack Nicholson and writer-director Nancy Meyers.
