Guide Review - "Bend It Like Beckham" DVD Review

This is a movie that really lifted my spirits. "Bend It Like Beckham" follows the pattern of many coming-of-age stories, yet it does so in such a way as to make an old story seem fresh. The movie sometimes falls into clichés, but its heart is in the right place, giving it an earnestness that drew me in. The film is about a teenage girl whose Sikh family lives in the London area. Jess Bhamra comes from a conservative family that is looking forward to the wedding of her older sister. Then against her family's wishes, Jess begins to play soccer, but problems arise when the big game and the big wedding are scheduled for the same day. I liked that "Bend It Like Beckham" is a warm human story that’s also flat-out entertaining.
