The Bottom Line

I loved "Adaptation" for its wit and humor: it is one of the most original films I've seen in a long time. The acting is superb and alone would be enough to carry the movie.

Guide Review - "Adaptation" DVD Review

I loved "Adaptation" for its wit and humor. I thought it was one of the most original films I've seen in a long time. In the movie, Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage) is a screenwriter hired to write a screenplay based on a discursive nonfiction book by Susan Orlean (Meryl Streep). The book is partly about an eccentric orchid enthusiast named John Laroche (Chris Cooper). When Charlie can't come up with a faithful adaptation, he writes a fictional version of himself into his script and invents a third act that involves drugs, sex, and guns. I suppose "Adaptation" is funnier if you know a little about screenwriting, but I think there are enough laughs for everybody. Also, the acting alone is enough to carry the film.
