"The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" DVD

By Ivana Redwine, About.com

DVD Release Date: December 16, 2003
Tagline: "An adventure in a league of its own."
Length: 110 minutes
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of fantasy violence, language and innuendo

Inspired by a comic book, this action-adventure movie assembles a team to battle an evil villain seeking world domination. The story is set in the Victorian era, and the league is made up of such stalwarts as Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), Captain Nemo, Mina Harker (of Dracula fame), an invisible man, Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll, and Tom Sawyer. In an effort to prevent a world war, the league travels to a fictional Venice.

Despite a potentially intriguing concept and Sean Connery’s considerable charisma, “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” is a movie that didn’t come together for me. This is a film that should have been entertaining, but somehow went awry. Despite all the action sequences and special effects, I was bored.

The DVD has good to excellent sound and picture quality. I’ve listed the bonus features below.

  • Full-Length Audio Commentary (Producers/Actors)
  • Full-Length Audio Commentary (Costume/Makeup/Visual Effects Team)
  • Behind-the-Scenes Documentary
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Widescreen Anamorphic Format
