Blockbuster Cuts Online DVD Rental Prices

Thursday December 23, 2004
The video rental wars continue.

Blockbuster has lowered the price of its three-DVDs-at-a-time online monthly subscription fee from $17.49 to $14.99, a reduction of $2.50.

Netflix offers a similar service for $17.99 a month, and it’s my understanding that they have no immediate plans to change their price.

Wal-Mart also has a similar service priced at $17.36, and it’s unclear to me what their plans are. There’s been quite a bit of speculation that the retailing giant will eventually get out of the DVD rental business.

From a consumer point of view, price is of course not the only consideration in choosing an online rental service. There are other factors to be considered, including the timeliness with which you receive the DVDs you request and the breadth of selection available.

Please note: This news item is dated December 23, 2004. Prices quoted here may change at some future date.
