DVD Pick: Julie & Julia
Written and directed by Nora Ephron, Julie & Julia (2009) is a feel-good movie that features a great performance by Meryl Streep as Julia Child (1912-2004), who co-authored Mastering the Art of French Cooking and did the TV show The French Chef. Because of Julia, millions of Americans lost their fear of dishes like boeuf bourguignon and sole meunière. Read more:

Wendy and Lucy DVD Review
You can tell Wendy and Lucy isn't going to be an ordinary movie from the very first shot. It just shows a railroad yard with a train lumbering through, but it's moody and arresting. Read more: Wendy and Lucy DVD review

DVD Pick: North by Northwest
Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest (1959), starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason, has been available on DVD for years, but now Warner Home Video has released a 50th Anniversary Edition two-disc DVD set containing a version of the feature film that is restored from original VistaVision film elements. The picture quality is superior to that of previous DVD editions, there are two new documentaries, and bonus materials from previous DVD releases are brought over to the new edition. The Seventh Seal DVD Review
Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957) was arguably the seminal film in what became a wave of subtitled foreign movies that large numbers of Americans went to see in specialty theaters known as art houses. Find out about the two-disc DVD version of The Seventh Seal.

DVD Pick: The Dead
The Dead is a John Huston-directed adaptation of James Joyce's short story. It is largely faithful to and generally captures the flavor of its source material. The DVD containing The Dead provides no bonus materials. But the superb artistic quality of this thought-provoking film makes it worth recommending. Read the DVD review and find out more.

Vampyr DVD Review
The mesmerizing film Vampyr is a one-of-a-kind vampire movie that constantly confounds viewer expectations. The film has a dreamlike quality, creating a psychological reality rather than a naturalistic one. The result is an enigmatic movie that is unsettling and haunting. Find out more in the Vampyr DVD review.
DVD Pick Dracula
The 1931 Dracula may not be the most artistic movie about vampires ever made, but it successfully maintains a creepy atmosphere throughout as it creates a world of its own that feels strangely organic. For me, Bela Lugosi forever defines the title character. Read a DVD review of Dracula.
